Your potential dog breed matches
Five breed suggestions based on your answers. Take a closer look before choosing your new companion.
Important: This is a guide, not a guarantee about an individual dog. Behaviour, health, breeding, socialisation and training vary. Always meet the dog, ask about appropriate health tests, and check that the seller or rescue is responsible. A puppy needs more frequent supervision and toilet breaks than an adult dog.
Find the right dog breed for your lifestyle
Choosing a dog is about more than appearance. A lively Border Collie, an affectionate Bichon Frise and a laid-back Greyhound can each be wonderful companions in the right home, but their exercise, grooming and training needs are very different.
Our free UK dog breed quiz considers your space, household, daily walks, experience, grooming preferences and time available. It compares your answers with 61 broad breed profiles and suggests five breeds to research, with direct links to dog and puppy adverts on Pet Classifieds. Results are an educational starting point rather than an assessment of a particular dog or a promise that puppies are currently advertised.
Dog breed quiz: frequently asked questions
How does the dog breed matching quiz work?
It scores typical breed characteristics against your exercise, home, family, pet, grooming and training preferences. The highest-ranked five profiles are shown with reasons to explore them and considerations to research further. Rankings are indicative, not scientific compatibility percentages.
Which UK dog breeds are included?
The finder currently includes 61 breed and crossbreed profiles, including Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Whippets, Cockapoos, Toy Poodles and Border Terriers. Suggestions link directly to existing Pet Classifieds breed categories.
Can I own a dog if I live in a flat?
Sometimes, yes. Home size alone does not determine suitability. Daily outdoor access, exercise, enrichment, training, toilet breaks and the needs of the individual dog matter more than simply having a garden.
Are any dogs completely hypoallergenic?
No breed can be guaranteed allergy-free. Some breeds shed less hair, but people can also react to allergens in saliva, dander and urine. Spend time with the individual dog and seek medical advice if allergies are a concern.
Can a dog be left alone while I am at work?
It depends on the dog, but prolonged isolation is a welfare concern. The RSPCA advises generally not leaving dogs alone for longer than four hours, and puppies need much shorter periods. Consider a dog walker, sitter or suitable day care if you are away for much of the day.
Should I choose a puppy or an adult rescue dog?
Both can be good options. Puppies need substantial time for socialisation, house-training and supervision. An adult rescue may have an established personality and needs you can assess with the rescue centre. Responsible breeders and rescues should answer your questions openly.
